— REALITY CHECK

Ready to Step Up But Unsure What’s Required?

A lot of NSW tradies put off registration because they keep hearing different advice about qualifications, experience, and what actually matters.

Meanwhile, they’re already leading jobs, managing trades, and taking on more responsibility on-site.

RIGHT NOW IT LOOKS LIKE

- Running sites but not recognised as the registered builder
- Working under someone else's registration to get projects moving
- Holding back because the process feels unclear

MOST OF THE TIME, THE HOLD-UP COMES FROM THINGS LIKE:

Not knowing which qualification pathway applies to you
Being unsure how your experience is assessed
Holding back because the process feels more complicated than it should
Once you understand the right pathway, the next step becomes a lot clearer.

— COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS

What Do You Need to Get Licensed in NSW?

"You must complete a Cert IV before applying."

A lot of builders assume the qualification comes first. It's a common misconception — often reinforced by providers who profit from selling the course.

WHAT PEOPLE ASSUME

A Cert IV does not guarantee registration.

A relevant qualification, such as:
• Certificate III in Carpentry or Bricklaying / Blocklaying
• Certificate IV in Building and Construction
• Diploma of Building and Construction
At least 2 years’ experience in a supervisor or management role on residential building projects
References from licensed builders you worked under to support your claimed experience

TO APPLY FOR A NSW BUILDER LICENCE, YOU GENERALLY NEED:

Your time on the tools is the qualification.

If you've been leading projects and making decisions on site, that experience is exactly what the registration process is designed to assess. No classroom required.

WHAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

"I need to go back and study first."

Many experienced builders delay because they believe more formal training is required before they can even apply.

WHAT PEOPLE ASSUME

Builder Registration helps you understand what applies to your situation and how to prepare a stronger application from the beginning.
